Project 4: Truth and Fiction

This project showcases the skills of creating 4 composited images to explore story and sequence through cultural signs and symbols. I explored a cultural experience of being Korean and various elements: A problem, conundrum, truth or lie, cliche, or an element of beauty/knowledge.

As a Korean American, this project showcases the reclaiming of my cultural identity. Growing up as a minority is a different experience that cannot be interchanged with any other experiences. During the vulnerable years of young adulthood, I continuously tucked away my Korean identity and became distracted by putting up a persona. As I shifted into adulthood, I began learning to be proud and embrace my roots. Moreover, the gender norms in Korea are much like the conservative views. With unrealistic beauty standards, being a woman has brought conflict within ourselves to satisfy the unattainable standards. Through the utilization of symbols, I created a collection of four sequences to portray my Korean culture along with the problems it faces.
